A.B.Desai is a family run business. The origins of the Desai family are from Dandi - Gujarat, India. The Desai Family has settled in Mauritius for more than 100 years and members of the family have been very active in the trading industry.

The company , originally started its activities under R.G.DESAI & CO in the beginning of the 20th century from which many other trading companies were formed headed by the different family members. The main activities were imports and distribution of many household items and before R.G.DESAI & CO was dissolved in 1986, the company dealt mainly in textile fabrics. A.B.Desai took over the activities of R.G.DESAI & CO, headed by Bhupendra Desai. His son, Ujjval Desai joined the business in 1996 till 2004. He helped in diversifying the business  by making use of the long term relationship with suppliers  and started the export business by being into the freeport sector and also diversified the activity by introducing household appliances in year 2000.

In 2004, Ujjval Desai, the fourth generation, together with trading partners known to him due to the export business, formed another company, mainly dealing in household appliances. After 10 years, he sold all his business interest and shares from the company  and since 1st July 2014 has been heading A.B.Desai. Today, the family run business represents several brands in its product portfolio and deal mainly in appliances, home textiles, luggage industry and general goods.
